Statement from Verda J. Hicks, MD, FACOG, president of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG):

“We are excited to learn that Opill is now available for shipping and look forward to this over-the-counter contraception soon becoming available for purchase by people in need of oral hormonal birth control.

“Contraception is a key component of reproductive health care, and the availability of an OTC hormonal option will alleviate some barriers to access that prevent people from being able to begin or continue oral hormonal contraception. This is especially important as there are increasing healthcare deserts across our country where people do not have access to gynecologic care. OTC birth control will also help to reduce confidentiality concerns for people, making it possible to take control of their reproductive health without risking their privacy.

“ACOG is pleased that Opill will be available for purchase in a three-month pack, which means it will be available to patients without requiring monthly refill, creating another path to access. Affordability remains a concern for many of the patients for whom Opill is the right choice, and we will continue to advocate for affordable pricing and comprehensive insurance coverage of OTC birth control.

“Data support the safety of OTC birth control and studies have affirmed the ability of patients across the reproductive lifespan, including adolescents, to effectively self-screen for their own eligibility to take oral contraceptives. We trust our patients to determine if this OTC method is best for them and remain committed to engaging in shared decision making with our patients about their contraceptive options.

“Today, ACOG is releasing a Practice Advisory for our members with important clinical information about this newly available over-the-counter contraception.”
