2025 Immunization Champion Award Winners

The 2025 Immunization Champion Award recognizes members who are doing an exemplary job of educating patients and other health care professionals about maternal immunization. This year, ACOG selected three members to receive the 2025 Immunization Champion Award in celebration of their leadership, innovation, collaboration, and perseverance in promoting maternal immunization. These winners demonstrate sustained commitment and dedication to increasing access to and implementation of maternal immunizations in their practice and community. Headshot of Kevin A. Ault, MD, FACOG, FIDSA 

Kevin A. Ault, MD, FACOG, FIDSA, is a board-certified ob-gyn and a professor in the Division of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Western Michigan University Homer Stryker M.D. School of Medicine. He is a longtime member of ACOG’s Immunization, Infectious Disease, and Public Health Preparedness Expert Work Group. He is also vice president of the National Foundation for Infectious Diseases and was a member of CDC’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP). Dr. Ault is a powerful advocate of maternal vaccines in his community. Named “top doctor” in Kansas City by Ingram’s magazine and recognized by ACOG as a COVID-19 Vaccine Confidence Champion, Dr. Ault has dedicated his life to being an immunization champion. He has appeared on multiple local and national news outlets to educate others about the importance of maternal vaccines and uses social media platforms to engage others who are seeking information. Dr. Ault’s roles in committees and research projects have led to evidence-based recommendations in the maternal immunization field, and his voice and passion are a testament to his perseverance in promoting maternal vaccines.

 

Headshot of Theodore Barrett, MD, MS, FACOG 

Theodore Barrett, MD, MS, FACOG, is a board-certified specialist in obstetrics and gynecology and an associate professor at Rutgers New Jersey Medical School. He served as the medical director for University OB/GYN Associates and is the information technology expert for the department. With a focus on population health and screening, he is a community leader for immunization and has championed the immunization screening and vaccine administration program by implementing a novel approach that includes electronic medical record prompts into the medical record and follow-up quality review to support his work . These electronic medical record prompts have led to high rates of pregnancy and postpartum vaccine acceptance despite COVID-19 challenges, and his successful programs have been highlighted in local and national meetings as best practice for other health care professionals. Dr. Barrett also works to increase access to vaccines by making them available at community events. Dr. Barrett has served as a board examiner for the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology and has been awarded numerous community grants for his work.

 

Headshot of Laurie Beth Griffin, MD, PhD, FACOG 

Laurie Beth Griffin, MD, PhD, FACOG, is a third-year maternal-fetal medicine fellow at Women & Infants Hospital and Brown University. She is passionate about using prenatal care interactions to improve vaccination rates for pregnant people and their partners and coparents, an often overlooked yet critical aspect of maternal and newborn health. Dr. Griffin is currently working with the Rhode Island Department of Public Health on innovative projects to minimize barriers that prevent in-office vaccination of partners and coparents during prenatal care, ultimately increasing awareness and accessibility of vaccinations for partners of pregnant people. She also works to ensure prenatal care professionals are up to date on the most recent vaccination recommendations for newborn caregivers. Her ultimate goal is to limit missed opportunities for vaccination for all family members to improve protection for the entire family unit from respiratory illnesses.

ACOG is proud to acknowledge the below Obstetrician–Gynecologist Immunization Champions. These Immunization Champions are considered leaders in maternal and adult immunization. They have demonstrated exceptional progress in increasing immunization rates among adults and pregnant people in their communities through leadership, innovation, collaboration, and educational activities aimed at following ACOG and CDC guidance to increase immunization rates among pregnant people.

This activity is supported by the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) as a part of a financial assistance award totaling $500,000 with 100 percent funded by ACOG and CDC/HHS.
