As patients in many states continue to lose reproductive freedoms and care deserts expand, affecting more communities, the need to stay committed to improving maternal health outcomes has never been more critical.

In recognition of Maternal Health Awareness Day 2025, the District VII Maternal Mortality Committee invited Ann Borders, MD, MSc, MPH, FACOG, from the Illinois Perinatal Quality Collaborative to speak on steps the Illinois Perinatal Quality Collaborative has recently taken to implement the Promoting Vaginal Birth and Birth Equity statewide quality improvement initiatives within Illinois birthing hospitals. The goal of the Alliance for Innovation on Maternal Health initiatives is to move forward actionable equity strategies and reduce disparities in nulliparous, term, singleton, and vertex cesarean births.
