The Skin You're In

By Vonda Roebuck Ware, MD, FACOG
You are not wrong for you were taught by generations to be strong.
To endure and persevere, be strong and courageous, bear it and grin,
Cuz, it’s THE SKIN YOU’RE IN.
No one really sees you unless you stand out or speak up,
But if it’s too tall or too loud, a label of “arrogant” or “angry” will be determined.
Cuz, it’s THE SKIN YOU’RE IN.
Work hard to be smart, play the part, and never give reason for a fight to start.
Seen, not heard, sounds absurd—but you better watch every single word … or you will become the villain,
Cuz, it’s THE SKIN YOU’RE IN.
It’s easy to believe “to whom much is given, much is required,” when you see the cost of being “boss” and how much is at stake in a system that works hard on your loss.
Act like you are grateful and humble in every win.
Cuz, it’s THE SKIN YOU’RE IN.
I serve in women’s health and love when women become their best version revealing a beauty within.
And I denounce any wrong, stand tall, shout loud, shine a bright light, use my words for justice and good, and through a system designed to see me lose, I win—you can blame all this and more on my melanin!
I am my ancestors’ wildest imagination. I will continue to serve and speak up for the disenfranchised and the marginalized.
Cuz, it’s THE SKIN I’M IN!
