ACOG Foundation Launches Quality in Action, a New Patient Safety Organization to Strengthen Ob-Gyn Care Nationwide
Washington, D.C.—The ACOG Foundation today announced the launch of Quality in Action, a patient safety organization (PSO) designed to help hospitals and clinical teams advance measurable, sustained improvements in ob-gyn care.
As the first PSO focused exclusively on ob-gyn safety, Quality in Action provides hospitals with a confidential, legally protected environment to review safety events, learn from data, and implement targeted solutions aligned with ACOG’s evidence-based guidance.
The launch of Quality in Action marks the next chapter in ACOG’s long history of leadership in perinatal quality improvement and patient safety, following its decision last year to withdraw from all federal funding to preserve the independence of its evidence-based recommendations.
“Quality in Action reflects ACOG’s commitment to helping ob-gyn care teams deliver the safest and highest quality care possible,” said ACOG CEO Sandra E. Brooks, MD, MBA, FACS, FACOG. “By offering a protected space for reviewing obstetric and gynecologic safety events, quality metrics, and hands-on guidance for improving patient care, we are equipping hospitals with the support they need to achieve lasting, meaningful improvement.”
Quality in Action offers a comprehensive suite of services designed for real clinical environments, including confidential safety event review, practical tools, team-based education, and hands-on coaching to support sustained implementation. The program’s robust data platform helps hospitals transform safety event reporting and near misses into actionable insights, offering clear guidance for improving outcomes.
“Ob-gyn clinicians deserve support that is grounded in the realities of their day-to-day work,” said ACOG President Steven J. Fleischman, MD, MBA, FACOG. “Quality in Action fills a long-standing gap by giving hospitals a single entry point for evidence-based patient safety tools, expert coaching, and meaningful data—resources that empower teams to improve safety and quality across the full spectrum of ob-gyn care.”
Quality in Action is designed to support inpatient and outpatient environments alike, embedding equity as an overt, deliberate, and inseparable component of every interaction, service, and improvement strategy. Quality in Action’s framework is grounded in the understanding that there is no equity without quality, and no quality without equity—a principle that guides how teams learn, measure progress, and implement change. Quality in Action upholds ACOG’s long-standing commitment to equitable, patient-centered care in all aspects of its work. Christie Allen, MSN, RNC-NIC, CPHQ, C-ONQS, vice president of quality improvement and programs at ACOG noted, “Hospitals often know where their challenges lie. What’s missing is the support to move from awareness to action. Our role is to walk alongside ob-gyn clinical teams, translating safety insights into measurable, lasting improvements that benefit all patients.”
Membership enrollment for Quality in Action’s inaugural year is now open, offering hospitals the opportunity to help shape the program’s evolving services and data capabilities.
