Breast Density and Notification Laws
Our Position
In the states, ACOG advocates against legislation that prescribes what must be communicated to patients about breast density and cancer risk, especially when the information is contrary to evidence-based scientific data and medical consensus.
There is no reliable (objective and quantitative) method for assessing breast density; no clinical guidelines recommend additional screening solely on the basis of high breast density; and breast density is not a major cancer risk factor. Due to the lack of data demonstrating a clear benefit, ACOG currently does not recommend the routine use of alternative or adjunctive tests to screening mammography in individuals with dense breasts who are asymptomatic and have no additional risk factors.
Further, ACOG advocates for increased research to identify more effective screening methods that will enhance meaningful improvements in cancer outcomes for those with dense breasts and minimize false-positive screening results.
