Contraception in Breast Cancer Survivors

A MicroRound presented by Mark D. Pearlman, MD, FACOG

About This Presentation

The OncoContraception Project (OCP) is a series of interactive online teaching modules providing detailed education on the effects of breast cancer treatment on ovarian function and the resulting, sometimes complex, effect on contraceptive counseling by health care professionals caring for breast cancer survivors.

The OCP is a non-ACOG funded grant from CDC to the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services. The work was performed through a Michigan Department of Health and Human Services subcontract to the University of Michigan Health System (Justine Wu, MD, principal investigator, and Mark Pearlman, MD, FACOG, co-principal investigator). The OCP eModule is scheduled to be available online in late 2024 or early 2025.

In this presentation, we will …

  • Describe the epidemiology of early onset breast cancer, survivorship, and contraceptive use in the United States
  • Outline the clinical, social, and cultural variables required for shared decision making in contraceptive selection
  • Recognize the unique elements of contraceptive counseling for breast cancer survivors, including those in diverse populations
  • Integrate these unique elements of contraceptive counseling for breast cancer survivors into clinical practice
