Identifying and Managing Obstetric Emergencies in Nonobstetric Settings
This multiyear initiative seeks to enhance the identification and management of pregnancy-related emergencies in nonobstetric settings.
This multiyear initiative seeks to enhance the identification and management of pregnancy-related emergencies in nonobstetric settings.
Complications related to pregnancy can occur at any time—throughout pregnancy, during delivery, or up to a year after the end of pregnancy. Some of these complications can be life-threatening and include…
- Cardiovascular conditions
- Hypertensive emergencies
- Postpartum hemorrhage
Patients who develop signs or symptoms of serious pregnancy-related complications and conditions may seek emergency care in nonobstetric settings.
State maternal mortality review committees have identified missed opportunities to recognize and treat these conditions in nonobstetric settings. To address this, ACOG and CDC launched a multiyear initiative. In collaboration with specialty organizations and clinical experts, we’ve developed tools and resources to help emergency care teams:
- Identify pregnancy-related conditions
- Improve readiness to manage and treat pregnant and postpartum patients
